Soul: Soul Hour – A Time to Unplug to Plug In

Soul: Soul Hour – A Time to Unplug to Plug In

Every day at 150 PM, my Google Calendar pops up a reminder on my iPhone that reads:

Soul Hour! Unplug to plug in :)

What is “Soul Hour” you might ask?

Soul Hour is a time I dedicate to myself every day to indulge in something that nourishes my soul.

Unplug: From obligations and technology

Plug in: To my inner joy – and something bigger than myself

For me, this can be taking a long hot shower, hula-hooping in the backyard, free-writing in my journal, creating in the kitchen, reading a few chapters of an inspirational book, or giving my furry ladies (or man if he’s lucky) a nice long cuddle sesh.

In fact, as a life coach who focuses on balancing the mind, body, and soul, it’s so important for me to honor this time for myself, inspiring my clients and others by actually walking the walk and not just talking the talk.

Does this mean I always find it easy to pull away from the emails, calls, and constant mind chatter around all the other things I “should” be doing?

Nope…in fact, I embrace my imperfection and realize that some days soul “hour” becomes soul “minutes.” But I consistently honor that time – even if it’s just for 10 minutes – and make those moments the most delicious of my day.

So how can you incorporate soul hour into your day?

Simple – start by taking these 3 easy steps:

1. Create your JOY list

I was recently reminded of how much I love the term “joy list” when reading Jennifer Pastiloff’s recent post on MindBodyGreen, as she talks about the way she inspires her students to use joy lists:

For example, a Sunday cuddle, a warm fire and a book you can’t put down, a kiss, a nice glass of red, a child’s pose. Whatever it is, see if you can connect to that ‘feel good feeling’.

As I’m inviting you to not only look at the list but to actually embody at least one thing on it during your soul hour, first create a master list of ALL the things that bring a smile to your face, then put a star by any of those things you can quickly tap into in the middle of your day for your go-to SOUL HOUR list.

If you get stuck, think of things you liked to do as a kid:

Were you a doodler? That artist is still in there, just waiting to come out and play.

Were you a dancer? Put on some music and MOVE that body!

You get the idea – have FUN with this!

2. Put it in your calendar

As business and life expert Marie Forleo says, “If it ain’t in your calendar, it ain’t real.”

So take a look at the shape of your life right now. Is Soul Hour realistic? If you can’t foresee yourself honoring that much time every day, better to start small. Even putting a calendar alert for “Soul MINUTE” is better than nothing.

The trick is to be CONSISTENT and set it up as a recurring event that pops up every single day…because your soul is worth that daily lovin’.

3.  Tell a friend (or two, or three)

Accountability is a girl’s (and guy’s) best friend. When you tell someone(s), you get them curious, and all of a sudden you have them asking how your “soul hour” is going. It’s not as easy to flake out on your appointment with yourself when enquiring minds want to know.

Added bonus? You may even inspire them to create their own “soul hour.”

So pick up the phone, shoot an email, send a tweet, or update your Facebook – your soul will thank you for it!

    Hi Sabrina,
This is a great idea but I may be among those who couldn’t consign a whole hour for this, unless you count my bath time with salts and incense and candlelight ;-) I’d commit to a walk in the garden, time with a good book and journaling about my blessings. For me, time spent on the upcoming posts for LFI is soul time too.

Thanks so much for stopping by Lori!

The beauty of bringing consciousness to “soul hour” is that you start to notice how many minutes in your day you already give to your “soul’s needs.”

I also love how you include the time you spend preparing your posts for your blog – in fact, everything you mentioned qualifies because it feeds YOUR soul! Love it!

Soul time is a necessity for me and when I don’t schedule it I get cranky! I need structure to keep it in existence for me so I use whatever I can – technical reminders, post-it notes, etc. In the old days (before iPhone!) I used to say, similarly to Marie Forleo, “If it’s not in my daytimer, it ain’t happening!” :)

Isn’t it amazing how the mind works when we have those visual anchors to remind us what’s important?

Another axiom that is key for me is “out of sight, out of mind” – so when I don’t have that “soul hour” reminder popping up, I’ll often realize too late that I’ve missed it. And like you said, I can get cranky!

Thanks for sharing your wit and wisdom here Sandi – I love when I “see” you stopping by!

Such a great idea! We all need to unplug for sanity nowadays… going to try this starting with minutes and hopefully building up the time. :)

Hello sweet Crystal! I’m so glad you stopped by and that this post resonated with you!

I absolutely support your focus to start smaller and allow it to grow…even if you start with “soul minute” (yes, SINGULAR minute) and then do it consistently, you’ll still be on your way to create a habit that will improve the quality of your life!

I love the way you think Sabrina! I especially love how you note that if something isn’t on your calendar it isn’t real! That pop up can make all the difference in what actions we take throughout the day…I mean, I would forget everyone’s birthday if it weren’t for my calendar alerts so you can see how easily you can forget yourself without the daily “ding”!

    • http://www.MyMiBoSo.com/ Sabrina

It’s so true! My calendar reminds me of what I need to do and what I WANT to do!

I will admit I actually used to dread those weekly Facebook birthday updates – but now I treasure them as they give me an opportunity to celebrate when I might otherwise forget!

The ego mind is the one that thinks we need to “keep everything in our head” – when we get over that, we can tap into how technology was meant to serve – not run – our lives :) .
